Weekly Update

Happy Friday All!

Thank you to all the parents that helped out with Variety show last weekend.  It was a huge success and the kids looked great!

Last week, we revisited how to get to the online Service logs.  Big things, such as Character Choir events and Variety show are being logged for the kids.  Things like small group act practice, boy scouts, etc.  need to be logged by you or your student.  The link is on the right hand side of my blog.  http://msjschaefer.blogspot.com  Before the holidays, I will total up hours and check in with your kiddos (and all 5th graders).
Big shout out to the kids (we will be celebrating next week and after Thanksgiving break) they went up 2% in Math and 14% in Reading for this month's eValuate assessment.  Awesome job!

Here are the highlights from this week:
Math:  We have been working on Chapter 8:  Multiplication of decimals.  Simple rule, they straight multiply and then move the decimal however many places are to the right of the decimals in the problem.  I know this doesn't make too much sense without an example, that's why I have been making a lot of the videos.  I am still trying to figure out a quick way to make them so that they can be viewed on all devices.  I am going to try IMovie next month.  They have a test on Tuesday and will be bringing home any missed practice work on Monday to help study.

Reading:  We just finished Molly's Pilgrim .  We have been focusing on building fluency and expression through reader's theatre.  This week we wrapped up Rumple-Stilt-Who?  Ask you child what character they were.  100 min. reading log is due on Monday.

Writing:   We are focusing on Informative writing and completing research on a Native American tribe.  Camp Wyman needs to be typed by Monday, as we are sharing then.

Word Work:  New words were given out on Monday and students have been putting them to practice in their contracts.  These are due on Tuesday, so they may be bringing them home on Monday night to finish.

Science:  Today was a great day for Science.  They got to venture over to Mr. Argint's room to see some interesting things, like a lamb heart.  Very cool, since our focus is on classifying living things (or once living things in this case).  After I climbed in Whitecliff Creek this morning (and almost didn't make it out), they got to see Protists/Protezoa under the microscopes.  Next week we will continue with Fungi.

Social Studies:  We are continuing to learn about Native American's and wrapping up Ch.2 soon.  Ask your students about their camp fire stories.  Native American houses are due on Monday or Tuesday.  Can't wait to see what they have come up with.  Attached is another copy of their requirements.

Mid-quarter grades will be in their folders on Monday or Tuesday.  Please don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions.

Thanks and have a great weekend!!
Jennifer
